Fuller’s earth has been mined in Aspley, Bedfordshire since the 16th century. In 1976 local people staged a mass protest against the Steetley Minerals company’s plans to expand operations in Aspley Heath Woods, an area of natural beauty.

On 6 May 1978 A Norwegian oil tanker, Eleni V, collided with a merchant ship off Lowestoft and sank, spilling 5,000 tons of oil, with disastrous consequences for wildlife and beaches in Norfolk and Suffolk. This half-hour documentary was in Anglia’s ‘Probe Special’ series.

Trade has been badly affected by the Eleni V oil spill, say Lowestoft hotel and boarding house owners.

At Great Yarmouth, Greenpeace members on board converted trawler the Rainbow Warrior prepare for an expedition to Newfoundland to try and prevent a seal cull. A local fisherman thinks they’re doing more harm than good.
