Background Information

The Rev. Narborough refers to the ‘towpath murders’ and the ‘Bentley’ case. Both garnered a substantial amount of attention from the national press. The ‘towpath murders’ refers to the murder of two teenage girls, on the towpath near Teddington Lock on the River Thames, in May 1953. A local man, Alfred Charles Whiteway, was found guilty of the rape and murder of the two girls, and later hanged at Wandsworth Prison on 22 December 1953. Cited http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Towpath_murders Derek Bentley was implicated in the murder of a police officer during a bungled break-in at a Warehouse in Croydon. He was sentenced to death on 11 December 1952, and later hanged for murder in Wandsworth Prison, in January 1953. Derek Bentley later received a posthumous pardon in 1998.
