Anglia Television news footage of Roy Hattersley campaigning for the 1983 General Election.

Roy Hattersley is on the campaign trail in Northampton. He speaks with two teenage boys, asking them if they’re still in school. Hattersley shakes the hands of the general public. Journalist Marcus Powell stops Hattersley for an impromptu interview. He begins by asking how this week is going for the Labour Party. In reply Hattersley argues this week has been better than the last having had the opportunity to discuss the issues that matter to the voters, including his assertion that Margaret Thatcher had failed at the Williamsburg Summit to boost the economy. When asked if Labour can buck the opinion polls and win the election, Hattersley replies that he is sure that Labour will triumph, subject to hard work and enthusiasm from his party. Mary Whitehouse enters a busy marketplace atop a bright yellow bus, emblazoned “Mary Whitehouse Speaking”. Via loudspeakers she challenges a surprised Hattersley. His considered response is received with cheering from his supporters.
