Elveden Estate
1961 , Elveden (Suffolk)
Cat no. 205964
Anglia Television programme depicting life on a Suffolk estate.
Nestled in the north-western corner of Suffolk is the Elveden Estate, home to a large country house, small village and large areas of breckland, woodland and farmland. Interviewed by Anglia Television correspondent Colin Eweing, Lord and Lady Iveagh discuss Elveden's transformation, over the course of fifty years, from sporting estate into highly productive farm. With vast tracts of the 23,000 acres converted into a mixture of arable land and livestock lots, they discuss their particular interests in land reclamation and dairy cattle breeding, and their support of scientific approaches to agricultural improvement. A selection of the estate's arable crops and livestock (including cattle, sheep and pigs) are shown, along with employees at work milking in the dairy sheds, tree felling in the forest, and working in the fields during irrigation, silage and harvest. The programme concludes with views of old and new homes in the adjacent village, and a final look at cattle in the fields.
