Illustrated with artworks, photographs and anecdotes, Bob Wellings presents this profile of the painter Alfred Munnings, who was born in the Suffolk village of Mendham in 1878 and died in 1959. Starting in the nearby market town of Harleston in Norfolk, Wellings visits The Magpie Hotel, where the landlord, Arthur Bush, talks about his links to Munnings and the painters great love of the countryside, especially horses, as well as showing off his large collection of Munnings painting. In the Essex village of Dedham, Wellings visits Munnings' home at Castle House, where his wife has filled the house with paintings and plans to open it as a permanent museum. Lady Munnings talks about her husband's life and work and his general disdain for modernism and modern life, before showing off their singing dog, Toby, and leading Wellings on a tour of Munnings' studios, which are crammed with paintings.
