East Anglian University

1962 , Norwich (Norfolk)

A short film about the founding of the University of East Anglia.

This Anglia Television film starts with a shot of Earlham Golf Course, now the campus of the University of East Anglia (UEA), viewed from Bluebell Road. Presenter Dick Joice gives an introduction to the programme, stating that the Norwich Corporation has given the site for the building of the UEA, following the securement of a government grant and money raised through an appeal. There is a shot of Norwich City Hall, then of Big Ben and Her Majesty's Treasury building in London. Neville Clarke interviews Henry Brooke, Minister of Housing. He explains how much government funding the UEA and other post-war universities will receive, the availability of university places into the future and government views on Britain’s level of education. The next shot is outside No.4, The Close in Norwich, and features an interview with Timothy Colman, Chairman of Appeal Committee, who explains why the UEA required additional funding via an appeal.
