Memorial Day ceremony at American Cemetery

This short sequence for the Anglia Television series 'Omnibus' shows the Memorial Day Service at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial. The United Kingdom and United States of America flags are shown at half-mast. Small flags on sticks are planted around the stone crosses at the graves. There are close-ups of sculptures of US servicemen. A plane makes a fly-past over the crowd assembled for the memorial ceremony. A marching band is seen in the parade. There follow scenes of prayer and the address at the service by officers and a mayor, the laying of wreaths and firing of a rifle salute. A woman places a posy by a grave with the Memorial building in the background.

Background Information

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States to remember the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday is observed each year on the last Monday of May. On Memorial Day the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff (half mast) position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial lies between the villages of Coton and Madingley outside Cambridge. It was opened in 1956, and commemorates American servicemen and servicewomen who died in World War II.
