The Local Flavour - How Beer is Brewed in East Anglia

1963 , Southwold (Suffolk)

Bob Wellings for Anglia TV interviews the regulars of the Lord Nelson pub in Southwold and also visits the local brewery owned by the Loftus family.

Location shots of the Crown Hotel and the Lord Nelson Hotel in Southwold, Suffolk. Inside the Lord Nelson public house, regulars enjoy a beer, a conversation and a game of darts. Bob Wellings narrates about the brewing industry. He then interviews the head brewer at a brewery. The brewer describes the significant stages of brewing a good beer and some of these stages are represented pictorially. In the brewery a workman demonstrates the job of skimming the yeast off fermented beer and explains what then happens to the yeast. Bob Wellings interviews the man in charge of the bottle-washing and bottling plant at the brewery. The man describes the production process and describes how the machinery has changed over the 40 years since he began in the industry. He prefers bottled beer to draught beer. Bob Wellings interviews a member of the Loftus family, who own the Adnams brewery in Southwold, about the changes made over the years to the brewing industry, which is apparently very little. The Loftus family are not frightened of competition from the bigger brewers. Returning to the Lord Nelson pub, Bob Wellings interviews a few of the customers on the topic of locally-produced beer; do they like it? What is their favourite? Do they prefer bottled or draught beer? Why do they visit the Lord Nelson in particular?
