Anglia TV reporter Geoff Druett interviews the Reverend Tom Willis, an East Yorkshire minister known for carrying out exorcisms. The Reverend told the York Diocesan Synod that he is concerned that people are now dabbling in the occult far more than they used to. Druett asks the Reverend what he means by this. The Reverend is concerned that people are consulting mediums more often and dabbling in black magic and home séances. The Reverend is concerned that repeated home séances might cause harmful effects. These effects being getting messages and then getting obsessed with the messages and becoming addicted, or getting destructive false information. Druett asks the Reverend if he thinks there is such a thing as external spirits or is it just a person’s inner turmoil? The Reverend argues a bit of both, but there is an outside occult influence. Druett asks why are people turning to the occult? Is this the failure of religion? The Reverend mentions the modern phenomenon of finding pleasure in material things and the advent of technology, and that people are now disillusioned and turning back to the primitive. Priests are now spending time performing exorcisms. Is this a con? The Reverend argues it isn’t. Druett says that cynics would say this kind of thing is a job for a psychiatrist not a priest. The Reverend says that both should work together more amicably. What sort of training does the Reverend have for vicars? Vicars need to be able to recognise genuine haunting or possession and that whether priest or layman, faith in God will win over.
