The marquee of the ABC Cinema on Ferensway in Hull advertises 'The Exorcist', an X-certificate horror film which has already attracted controversy in the United States. Despite sparking similar outrage amongst British pressure groups, the film proves popular in places like Hull, where many queue for tickets. Amongst those milling around outside the cinema is Reverend Mark Simons, who tends to some of those queuing, offering spiritual guidance and trying to dissuade them from seeing the film. Interviewed by an Anglia Television correspondent, the Reverend criticises the film as 'evil and harmful' (despite having not viewed it personally) and talks about his role, which largely involves offering literature which contains a contact list for local ministers. Discussing some of the distressing calls he and other ministers have received, they aim to offer prayers over the phone, suggest the reading of certain scriptures and encourage those effected attend church.
