Police Manage To Keep Skinheads Moving On Sunny Bank Holiday But Some Arrests Made

1970 , Skegness (Lincolnshire)

Anglia Television news item concerning youth culture and behaviour in seaside towns.

Crowds of youths run through the seafront gardens at Skegness. Many are dressed according to “skinhead” fashion; button-down shirts, jeans and braces; close-shaven hair and sideburns. Police attempt to control the crowds and people are pushed and pulled about roughly. Onlookers get caught up in the action. A young man is apprehended and escorted to the rear of a police van. These scenes are then contrasted with more peaceful seaside images; holidaymakers ride the Ferris Wheel or enjoy a paddle in the sea. At the Clock Tower, a journalist, Ken Hayes, reveals the public’s attitude to youth subcultures; reports on the recent behaviour and arrests of the “skinheads” and the possible effects on tourism.
