Background Information

Margaret Thatcher was appointed as Secretary of State for Education and Science, following the Conservative Party winning the 1970 general election under Ted Heath. As a result of the party’s attempts to cut spending, Thatcher abolished school milk for juniors (schoolchildren aged seven to eleven). This decision caused a storm of protest, leading to the moniker “Margaret Thatcher, Milk Snatcher”. Thatcher became party leader and Leader of the Opposition on 11 February 1975. Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister on 4 May 1979.
