Threshing
1961 , Great Leighs (Essex)
Cat no. 145375
Anglia Television report on traditional steam-powered threshing in Essex.
Anglia Television correspondent Dick Joice explores the remnants of steam-powered threshing on a farm in Essex, where Mr White shuns modern combine harvesters with his Burrell steam engine, dubbed 'Spanker'. On the farm of Mr Langdon, the traction engine is used to align the baler and the drum, before the flat belts are attached between the drum and the engine and, with a blow of the whistle, the threshing gets underway. The engine is shown in operation, watched by Joice and a group of children. The thresher converts the crop of winter oats into baled hay and chaff for stock feed, and diverts the higher quality grain into separate sacks.
