Cambridge Bumping Races
1961 , Cambridge (Cambridgeshire)
Cat no. 144873
Anglia Television footage with commentary of the May Bumps along the river Cam.
With commentary provided throughout, rowing teams representing the colleges of the University of Cambridge compete against each other in ‘Bumping’ races on the River Cam. Crews prepare, and the sound of a cannon signals the start of the race. Teams compete on the water, attempting to catch up with and ‘bump’ the boat in front, whilst also avoiding being 'bumped' from the boat behind. Meanwhile, spectators line the riverbank, with some running or cycling along to support the teams.
