[Eldon Griffiths Visits Refugees at RAF Stradishall]

1973 , Stradishall (Suffolk)

Anglia Television report on a visit to an emergency refugee centre.

Conservative MP for Bury St Edmunds, Eldon Griffiths, visits RAF Stradishall in Suffolk, which has provided sanctuary for displaced Ugandan Asians following their forced expulsion from the country by President Idi Amin in 1972. After meeting a number of refugees, Griffiths talks to Anglia Television correspondent Malcolm Allsop about the success of the operation, which involved the reception and welcoming of 3,300 individuals, the majority of whom have found housing and work. The resettlement proved to be a difficult task, which is why Griffith claims it to be such a success, suggesting the smooth integration of refugees is a tribute to the tolerance of the British people.
