Ugandan Asian refugees arrive at a reception centre.

At Stansted Airport, Ugandan Asian families disembark from a British Caledonian plane carrying their hand luggage. An air stewardess in red tartan carries a sleeping child. At an unidentified reception centre which looks like an RAF base, the recent arrivals walk in the grounds and gather for a meeting. Group Captain Rothwell is interviewed about the increase in number of people to be accommodated from 1,000 to 2000. 400 people arrived over the weekend, and it is clear that more accommodation is needed. He explains that feeding arrangements are a problem. The whole centre has gone over to Asian food, having previously had European food available for staff. Asked whether the visitors are happy, Group Captain Rothwell suggests that the interviewer chat with them. A father with his child is happy that the centre offers teaching for the children, accommodation and food. Two girls are asked ‘what have you being doing with yourself?’ They reply that they have been helping, that European people are very good to us and that being in this town, in London, “it is fascinating for us”.
