Jack Herd: Newspaper Vendor

1961 , Norwich (Norfolk)

Anglia Television profile of a local newspaper seller.

The newspaper trade and the daily routine of a blind newspaper vendor are intertwined in this poetic portrait made by Anglia Television. Told in verse, Jack Herd's shift begins on Gentleman's Walk, where he sells Norwich's Evening Daily Press to passers by, come rain or shine. Later, he moves his pitch to busy London Street, collecting his chair from the National Westminster bank. Sitting against the wall opposite, occasionally shouting 'evening paper', he thinks about the work all those 'clever chaps' that ends with fellows such as himself, selling 'papers on the corner.
