Mr Pastry Opens Renovated Store in Aylsham

1960 , Aylsham (Norfolk)

Anglia Television report on a shop opening by television's 'Mr Pastry'.

The BBC's bumbling resident clown, Mr Pastry (portrayed by Norwich-born Richard Hearne), visits the Norfolk market town of Aylsham for the 'opening' of a store called Pages. Watched by a small crowd, Mr Pastry throws a hammer to smash open the shop's glass doors, before conducting a 'roof-wetting' ceremony, hammering open a barrel of beer on the shop roof. Interviewed by Anglia Television correspondent Colin Bower, Mr Pastry talks about his reasons for visiting Aylsham, his unorthodox method of opening stores and the practice of 'roof-wetting'.
