Visit To A Suffolk Iron Foundry

1962 , Stowmarket (Suffolk)

Anglia Television document the arduous and intricate work of making lawn mowers at the Suffolk Iron Foundry.

Two children play catch in a garden as their father mows the lawn. Dick Graham provides off-camera commentary throughout as the film continues, showcasing the work of the Suffolk Iron Foundry, which produces metal castings to make lawn mowers. As Dick Graham explains the process in detail, men and women are at work at the foundry. Scrap iron is melted in a furnace, and the molten metal is poured into moulds. The set castings are then removed from the moulds, and travel by conveyor belt to the machine shop. A machine operator drills holes into the moulded cast iron sideplates. The process of producing the metal lawn mower blades is shown; a job for man and machine. On the factory floor, more mower parts are created from sheets of metal, and engine cylinders are drilled and honed. Women work in the factory piecing together the engine parts, before the engine is tested, and the entire lawn mower is assembled and sprayed with paint before receiving a final quality control check.
