[Slum Housing in Ipswich]

1963 , Ipswich (Suffolk)

Anglia Television investigation into slum property and exorbitant rents in Ipswich.

Anglia Television correspondent Michael Robson investigates the problem of slums in East Anglia, a vicious circle of overcrowding, poor living conditions, extortionate and abusive landlords and the 'slow machinery of the local council'. Amidst the slums of Ipswich, Robson visits terraced houses in deep decay where families live six to a room. One of the tenants, Mrs. Williamson, speaks of high rent and poor living conditions, whilst another woman claims a lack of assistance from the council. Attempting to speak to landlords, Robson is brushed off by Mr. Singh, a local shopkeeper, and talks to Mr. Glasgow, who has recently evicted tenants and shows little sympathy for their situation. Ross Haymer, a prospective local council candidate, raises grave concerns about the situation, which he has publicised in the local press. Meanwhile, Mr. Skinner, chairman of the Ipswich Housing Committee, claims a lack of judicial control, defends the council's stance and details an 18-month waiting period for council families, with any homeless families split up and their children taken into care.
