Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race In Chapelfield Gardens

1971 , Norwich (Norfolk)

Anglia Television news report from Chapelfield Gardens in Norwich for the Shrove Tuesday pancake race.

Anglia Television’s regular commentator Vic Birtles welcomes the viewer to Chapelfield Gardens in Norwich for “the first big event of the racing calendar in 1971”, referring to the all-women line-up for the Jif Lemon Pancake Race, which includes About Anglia’s regular commentator Jane Probyn sporting a number fourteen shirt. Vic Birtles chats to Jane Probyn and then race organiser Jill Fulcher, before the women compete in the novelty race, all carrying pancakes in frying pans. Nineteen cities throughout the United Kingdom were due to take part in the Jif Lemon Pancake Races, with the fastest time of all the cities becoming supreme champion. Vic Birtles interviews Mrs Shaw who gave the fastest time in Norwich, despite being, in her own words, “quite a bit older” than most of the runners. Silent footage then turns to a pancake race in Olney, Buckinghamshire with a close up of the winner. Furthermore, returning to Norwich, for comedy effect, there shows speeded up footage of Jane Probyn and a competitor racing along the pathway of Chapelfield Gardens.
