Background Information

Roy Calne conducted Europe’s first successful adult liver transplant in May 1968, in a 46 year old woman with hepatocellular carcinoma. The donor was a child with viral meningitis, whose parents had consented for the kidneys and liver to be retrieved when mechanical ventilatory support was to be discontinued. The patient recovered from a long and technically demanding operation, but died two months later due to bronchopneumonia.
