Anglia Television report on whelk fishing narrated by fisherman, Mr Cox.

Off-camera commentary is provided throughout by Mr Cox, whose family has for generations been involved in the whelk fishing trade. Shots of the whelk house; inside whelks are boiled in water and then emptied from their nets into baskets for drying. The narrator, Mr Cox, demonstrates the activity of tarring pots and then is seen digging into a mound of herring bait in preparation for a fishing trip. Another man, Alan, braids a fishing net. Two boats, working as a pair, head out on a fishing expedition. Fishermen on board smoke a pipe as they travel out to sea; later they work together to pull up a number of whelk pots from the water, and empty the whelks onto the deck, sorting the whelks from the rubbish and other shellfish. Herring bait is put in an empty pot and thrown overboard, meanwhile whelks are measured in a tub and emptied to a net. The crew relax on board after sorting the catch, and head back to the shore.
