Shelter Report Lists Jaywick Sands Holiday Site At Clacton As One Of The Worst Slums The Organisation Has Ever Seen

1977 , Clacton (Essex)

An Anglia Television news report from Jaywick Sands holiday site following an inspection by the housing charity 'Shelter'.

Permanent residents of the chalets at the Jaywick Sands Holiday site go about their daily business. Anglia TV reporter David Henshaw provides details of a recent inspection of the site by the Public Health Advisory Service, who gave the accommodation a scathing report, claiming it to be uninhabitable. Female resident Pat MacCann is interviewed about why she chose to live in one of the chalets on the site, and how she manages without electricity and without a toilet. Speaking on behalf of the housing charity Shelter, Bill O'Neil asks who is responsible for the poor condition of the chalets and the site: Clacton Urban District Council or the site’s freeholders? Colonel H. Harvey Williams claims the Clacton Urban District Council have taken every measure to make the site habitable for its residents, arguing the chalets were originally to be used only as temporary holiday accommodation.
