Mrs Joy Baker Refuses To Send Her Children To School

1960 , Thuxton (Norfolk)

Anglia Television report on a mother who refuses to send her children to school.

From her modest home in the Norfolk village of Thuxton, Mrs Joy Baker has spent five years fighting the County education authority for the right to educate her seven children at home. Now that the Norfolk County Council has issued a writ to make three of the children wards of court, Anglia Television correspondent Peter Le Marchant interviews the 37-year-old mother. Despite the legal threats, Mrs Baker is adamant that all parents should have the right to determine how their children are educated and by whom. She discusses her view of schooling and the quality of modern education, and warns against the 'extreme unhappiness' that school can cause and the 'extremely wrong atmosphere in which children are kept'.
