[Proposed Redevelopment of Central Cambridge]

1962 , Cambridge (Cambridgeshire)

Anglia Television report on plans to redevelop central Cambridge.

Bob Wellings reports from Cambridge, where a controversial scheme is being considered to redevelop the centre of the city, including the establishment of a new shopping area. Mr Wade, a County Planning Officer, speaks in favour of the plans, suggesting they will preserve Cambridge as a university town, and addresses local opposition and concerns about traffic and parking and the input of developers and landowners. Cambridge University remains opposed to the plans, with Mr Switzer of the Department of Estate Management claiming the plans will destroy the character of Cambridge, citing a lack of space for commercial expansion and the need to consider alternatives outside the city centre. One building affected by the plans is Fisher House, the chaplaincy of the university's male Roman Catholic population. Monsignor Alfred Gilbey talks about the role of Fisher House as a religious and social centre for 350 students, their opposition to the plans and the need for his chaplaincy to be centrally located.
