Anglia TV news report about a competition to find the most polite shop assistant, including an interview with the winner who works in Woolworths in Milton Keynes.

A lady is having her hair done at a salon while the hairdresser, Pat Leyshaw, talks to her. Another hairdresser is shown chatting to her customer. View from the mirror as Pat Leyshaw continues to style the lady's hair and talk to her. Reporter Owen Spencer-Thomas interviews Pat Leyshaw. She says that it is important to be courteous to customers and be friendly in order to create a nice atmosphere. She feels that customers can feel a bad atmosphere straight away but they say that this hairdressers is a home from home. Janet Cappelland, Woolworth’s shop assistant and competition winner, is at the till as a customer hands her items they want to buy. Close up of Janet on the till and the customers in the queue next to her. Close up of her bagging the items and handing them to a customer. A customer asks her how much an item is which she answers with a smile. Owen Spencer-Thomas interviews Janet and asks her why she thinks she won the competition. She hopes that she won it as she is helpful and polite. Own Spencer-Thomas then interviews David Taylor, competition organizer, who says that he was looking for someone who is polite and projects their own personality like people in old corner shops did years ago. Owen Spencer-Thomas mentions that they were also looking for the best establishment and so asks which characteristics they were looking for. David Taylor replies that they were looking for the same things as they were in an assistant and that it’s very creditable that a small shop from a large organisation projected itself in the way it has done.
