Sir Winston Churchill on a ceremonial visit to the proposed Churchill College, Cambridge.

Anglia Television news film of Sir Winston Churchill visiting the site of the new Churchill College, Cambridge on 17 October 1959. In the back of a chauffeured car Churchill can be seen giving the V for Victory sign. There are views of the assembled crowds. Churchill walks past crowds towards a marquee. He is presented with a spade and proceeds to shovel earth around a tree. Churchill stands at the microphones and gives a speech surrounded by dignitaries and people connected with the new college not yet built. Visitors inspect a model of the planned college buildings.

Background Information

A new Cambridge college, the first to be named after a living person, was announced in 1958. In 1959 a site was chosen in north-west Cambridge, one mile from the city centre. On 17 October 1959 Sir Winston paid his sole visit and planted two trees, but he never saw the built College. Churchill College opened to students in 1960.
