[Battle of Britain Anniversary Preparations at RAF Coltishall]
1961 , Coltishall (Norfolk)
Cat no. 110556
Anglia Television report on preparations for a Battle of Britain airshow.
John McGregor reports from RAF Coltishall in Norfolk, where preparations are underway for an open day to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Battle of Britain. A long-serving Norfolk man, 'Pop' Gee, talks about his various roles working on the base since 1939. A Lightning F1 jet is shown in flight and landing with the assistance of a parachute. The parachute is collected by [Senior Aircraftman] SAC Gilray, who talks about his work as a parachute packer, with views of the packing room. An aircraft is refuelled as McGregor talks to Flying Officer Vaughn Radford, the youngest pilot in the No. 74 squadron. Having flown and landed a Spitfire, Group Captain Bird-Wilson, Commanding Officer of RAF Coltishall, recalls his memories of flying during the Second World War. A variety of aircraft - including Hurricanes, Vulcans, Valiants and Spitfires - practise their fly-pasts and acrobatics ahead of the open day. Marching bands and gymnasts rehearse as McGregor talks two organisers of the day, Flying Officer Pat Miller, treasurer of the fund, and Squadron Leader Vance, chairman of the Battle of Britain committee.
