Anglia TV news item; Tony Adams reports from Peterborough on the subject of the 1981 Census.
People walk along the high street in Peterborough. A leaflet with the title ‘An Important Message About the 1981 Census’ is shown. A sheet with information about the census in different languages and a close up of Cantonese writing. Shots showing multiculturalism in the high street. Reporter Tony Adams talks to a woman working on the census and asks about the subject of confidentiality as people are going to be asked to give a lot of personal information. Woman replies that it is entirely confidential. She explains the procedures that have been put in place to ensure that everything remains confidential, such as no information becoming public for at least 100 years. Adams asks how non-English speakers will cope with the forms as they are difficult enough for English speakers to understand. She answers that the census questions have been translated into 9 different languages and people will have interpreters if necessary.
