[Opening of Cinema City]

1978 , Norwich (Norfolk)

Anglia Television report on the opening of an art house cinema in Norwich.

Last minute preparations are underway for the opening of Cinema City, a new exhibition space focussed on art cinema and a permanent home for the successor to the Norfolk and Norwich film theatre. Constructed inside the old Suckling Hall, the building has new signage, a box office and a large auditorium, all awaiting an audience. In an interview with Anglia Television correspondent Paul Barnes, Cinema City administrator Peter Broughan talks about the cinema, its strict box office targets and its partnerships with local authorities and arts associations, as well as the involvement of the British Film Institute, which will see Cinema City become the first regional film theatre in England. The nature of films to be programmed at the cinema, is also discussed, which Broughan suggests will fill the gaps left by commercial exhibitors and promote the idea of 'cinema' rather than just films.
