Anthony Abrahams remembers his uncle, Olympic athlete Harold Abrahams.

Anthony Abrahams, nephew of Olympic athlete Harold Abrahams, is interviewed on the grass in front of Bedford School buildings. The recording begins as he refutes a question about anti-Semitism asked previously and not recorded. He continues by saying that obviously there is anti-Semitism about. Harold Abrahams when young was a brilliant athlete and aggressive in debate, and some people would have resented that. Anglia TV interviewer Owen Spencer Thomas asks how Anthony Abrahams felt towards his uncle. He replies that he loved him, that Harold was his youngest uncle and encouraged him, and that they worked closely together in the last fifteen years of Harold’s life. He says that his uncle was a great man.

Background Information

The Royal Premiere of ‘Chariots of Fire’ was held on Monday 30 March 1981 at the Odeon, Leicester Square, London. The film is about two British athletes who competed in the 1924 Olympic Games, Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams. Harold Maurice Abrahams, CBE 1899 - 1978 won the gold medal in the 100 metres sprint at the 1924 Olympic Games. He was born in Bedford. Anthony Claud Walter Abrahams 1923 - 2011 was a British barrister and educationalists who founded the CfBT Education Trust. His work was fundamental to the creation of a professional structure for the teaching of English as a foreign language.
