Preparations for the fen skating championship

People ice skating on The Fens which has frozen over. Mr Fisher, secretary of the skating club, walks on the ice towards the bank, before turning around and walking back towards the camera. The reporter Greg Barnes asks him what the conditions are like for the ice. Mr Fisher replies that it has been a good night for it. He jokes that it’s so cold that they are all mad really for being there. Barnes asks him what the actual surface of the ice is like and whether it will provide a good, fast circuit. Mr Fisher replies that if it keeps freezing it will be very fast, just like glass. He adds though that the wind will spoil the times. They have been waiting five years for the ice to be like this as they had the championships that long ago. Barnes asks if that means the skaters get a bit rusty. Mr Fisher confirms this but says that people will still have a go. People skate towards the camera on the ice and the camera pans across the frozen lake. Barnes interviews the winner of the past skating championship. He says that it has been a long while since he’s been involved in speed skating and that he plays golf, football and goes to Nottingham ice rink in order to keep in training. When Barnes asks what qualities you need to be a champion, he replies that you need to be competitive in sport. As a farmer, in the winter you’re not so busy and so you go ice skating. A skater pulls a child along the ice on a sledge while other skaters glide past. Skaters carry barrels across the ice.
