Torvill and Dean skate at the opening gala of the East of England Ice Rink.
Performers at the opening gala of the East of England Ice Rink, filmed for Anglia Television news. A female skater wearing a top hat completes her dance. There is a view of the audience. Short scenes of a young female dancer identified by Anglia as Tracy Hamilton, aged 8, and another female ice dancer identified as Sue Jackson. Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean in gold costumes take to the ice, and their entire routine to ‘Putting on the Ritz’ is filmed, plus their encore dance to the same music. Their routine incorporates tap dance steps. The performances receive thunderous applause. Finally, a team of skaters wearing red appear on the ice as the announcer introduces a programme of ice hockey and speed skating demonstrations. The Peterborough Pirates played a short ice hockey match against Streatham.

Background Information
The official opening gala for the East of England Ice Rink at Bretton, Peterborough was held on the evening of Sunday 23 May 1982. Torvill and Dean, the British, European and World Ice Dancing Champions were the starring performers, together with other top British skaters and exhibitions of speed skating and ice hockey. The programme also featured the first appearance of the Peterborough Pirates ice hockey team in a short match against Streatham.
