The Gift: Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts

1979 , Norwich (Norfolk)

Anglia Television special celebrating the opening of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia.

Anglia Television special focusing on the fine art collection of Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury, which was donated to the University of East Anglia along with a new building in which to house it. The programme features interviews and profiles of many involved, including the Sainsbury's, architect Norman Foster, lighting and museum designer George Sexton and landscape architect Lanning Roper. Highlights from the collection are also shown, including the largest collection of Francis Bacon works outside the Tate Gallery and key objects such as 'The Head of Oba', a 16th century sculpture from Benin, as well as Henry Moore's 'Mother and Child', John Davies' 'Bucket Man' and 'Little Dancer aged fourteen' by Degas. Many facets of Norman Foster's low-cost, high-technology building are explored, from overall design to key features such as overhead lighting bays and centrally controlled blinds. Following a private view of the new building and its contents, attended by art world luminaries from across the globe, overwhelmingly positive views are shared by artists, art critics and gallery directors. And once the party has died down, the new building finally welcomes one of its other key tenants, the University's School of Fine Art, with students researching via books, prints, slides and, of course, the artworks themselves.
