Scenes of Luton Job Centre for report on unemployment figures.
Exterior views of the Luton Job Centre with adverts and posters in the windows including ad for a job club offering additional support for people unemployed for six months or more. The report that follows is illustrated with street scenes of people out and about in Luton. Anglia TV reporter Peter Lugg says that 10,000 people are out of work in Luton, which is 10-12% of the working population. The Independent Employment Unit have published a report which attempts to present the cost of unemployment to communities. In Luton the total cost amounts to £72 million a year. In Liverpool the figure is £380 million, and in Glasgow £500 million, but Luton is the highest in the East of England region. Norwich follows at £64 million, Basildon £41 million and Corby £40 million. This is based on £6,500 per person per annum. Government ministers are likely to contest these figures as they are based on unemployment figures higher than official estimates. This short video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
