District Council tree planting projects to replace trees lost in great storm.

Scenes of a tall tree fallen over a frozen pond and other damaged trees on the ground a few weeks after the great storm during the night of 15–16 October 1987. Anglia TV reporter Surrey Beddows states that Essex trees were particularly badly affected by the storm. Norfolk was awarded £35,000 by the Countryside Commission for tree planting, and the Braintree district of Essex alone has received £25,000. Braintree District Council plans to match that sum has come up with a unique scheme to encourage homeowners to plant trees. Each homeowner will be eligible for up to three vouchers each worth 75% towards purchase of a new tree, up to a maximum of £7.50. Interview with Melvyne Crow, Landscape Planner for Braintree District Council who says there is no restriction on types of trees but they would hope to limit evergreens to avoid too much Leyland cypress. The Council is also offering grants for tree surgery and free fruit trees for tenants. They will replace all 600 trees lost in council open areas and aim to encourage schools and organisations to adopt trees and take part in planting schemes. This short video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
