Research scientist predicts effects of warmer seas including polar ice cap melting and challenge to sea defences.
Dr William Carter of the University of Ulster is interviewed on a beach (the entire interview could be Sizewell beach, Suffolk). He talks about the predicted effects of ocean warming and rising seas. He says the worst affected initially are likely to be South-East England, East Anglia and towards Yorkshire. Maria MxCann of Ulster TV mentions the problem of broken sea defences in East Anglia. Dr Carter suggests that current sea defences will be ineffectual, and new solutions will be required in the next 50 years. Asked about the likely cost, he says this might be beyond the Trident budget. Industry should be taking responsibility for the cost, but it is likely to fall to central government, and governments internationally. He says the root of the problem is industrial pollution with the gases released over the past 150 years causing the atmosphere and oceans to warm up so that now the Antarctic ice sheet is beginning to melt. Maria McCall mentions his concern about coastal buildings and asks about Sizewell nuclear power station. He says he would be concerned about the future development of Sizewell over the next 50 years. Scene of Sizewell power station from the beach. This video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia (and perhaps also to be shown on Ulster Television).
