Scenes of the Reverend David Armstrong filmed in Northern Ireland and in Cambridge.

This Anglia TV report opens with scenes from 1985 of the Reverend David Armstrong at his church in Limavady, Northern Ireland. The Protestant minister became friends with the local Catholic priest Father Kevin Mullan and made a Christmas Day visit to the Catholic Church which was provocative to many people at the time. David Armstrong’s attempts to bring the Protestant and Catholic communities closer together met with a strong reaction from parts of the community and he was forced to leave. Reporter David Beake describes the background to David Armstrong’s arrival in England to take up his current post. He and Father Kevin Mullan had visited the USA together to call for work rather than weapons to be sent to Northern Ireland. In Cambridge, David Armstrong is seen at the breakfast table with his wife and children. He talks about the extreme loyalty he received from some members of his former congregation, but says others considered him wrong and would not accept that a Catholic could be a Christian. Cambridge scenes include Holy Trinity Church where he will be inducted into the Anglican Church.
