Report on reaction to the case of a child bride from Oman living in Luton.
Scenes filmed to accompany an Anglia Television news story about a child bride living in Luton, reported as the second case of its kind concerning a foreign student. Exteriors of terraced houses in Belmont Road, Luton and focus on the house where a 21-year-old man and a 13-year-old girl are living. The reporter knocks on the door and calls through the letterbox. The couple married when the man was on holiday in Oman and the girl was aged 12. The man is in the third year of an engineering course at Luton College of Higher Education, sponsored by the Omani government. Exterior of the College, and of Rotheram High School, Luton where the girl is a pupil. The reporter states the opinion of the headteacher that the girl had settled in well and appeared to be very happy. He reports that other children have said that her long red robes made her stand out, she had been involved in fights, and other pupils had been “asked to make allowances for her”. The couple will be leaving the UK for Oman tomorrow. At Westminster in London, Graham Bright MP for Luton South says there is a loophole in UK law and he is bringing a bill to the House of Commons to close it. He talks about observing the laws and customs of the country where you are staying, and the protection of young people.
