Anglia TV news item; Britain's first scheme for recycling drinks cans has been set up in Northampton.

A little girl carries a box of cans while walking to towards the depot. She puts one of the cans into the machine as commentator Surrey Beddows explains that two machines have been installed at the local council's Westbridge depot. People take in their used aluminium cans, pop them in a chute which automatically gives out a receipt. The little girl pushes the ‘push for receipt’ button and takes the receipt. Beddows explains that for every two cans, people can reclaim one penny from the council. In return, the council are paid for the amount of cans collected by the firm. The firm can sell the aluminium for between £500 and £1000 per ton. Two men hold a block of crushed cans between them and a close up of the ‘Can Recycling Centre’ sign is shown. Beddows talks about the amount of cans that are thrown away in Northampton and how if the project is successful the company hopes to set up similar schemes elsewhere.
