Ipswich branch of the Commission for Racial Equality advocates a new Code of Practice to prevent any breach of the Race Relations Act.

A woman walking along an Ipswich street and entering a door marked ‘Community Relations Officer’ is identified as Mrs Fabiana Mayhew. She was sacked from her job due to racial discrimination and awarded compensation by an Industrial Tribunal. She was supported in bringing her action by the Commission for Racial Equality. The Ipswich branch of the Commission now has a new resource, a Code of Practice which can be used to try and prevent a similar situation in future affecting anyone in the 8,500 strong ethnic minority population of Ipswich. People of West Indian appearance are shown in a bar. Nancy Jaeger, Community Relations Officer, says the Code of Practice will make a big difference because it contains practical guidelines and recommendations which can be followed with organisations to avoid any breach of the Race Relations Act. She describes the effect of higher unemployment levels for people from minority populations, and how this connects with housing, education and health. Statistical evidence shows the lower recruitment prospects for black and other ethnic minority people. The Community Relations project has the backing of Ipswich Borough Council.
