Regional launch of marketing campaign for pub facilities.
Exterior of the Louis Marchesi pub on Tombland in Norwich, Norfolk with people walking past in deep snow. Inside the bar, Anglia TV reporter Alastair Yates is introduced to a new venture to attract more customers to pubs across the country. A leaflet reads: “Announcing a Brewers’ Society initiative to bring more tourists and visitors to your pub. A sales and marketing campaign backed by the brewing companies of Britain and supported by all sectors of the licensed trade.” The aim is for pubs to show greater social awareness and improve tourist information. On show is a range of symbols for display in pub windows to explain the services and facilities within, in what is described as a continental approach – “they’ll take the guesswork out of visiting pubs”. Sitting near a blazing fire, Richard Allen of the Brewers’ Society says there has been investment in facilities for family and leisure entertainment in pubs and the aim is to let the public what may be available. This can include bar food, accommodation, facilities for disabled people (“something which has never really been done before”) and restaurant services. A folding leaflet with map promotes “Pubs with family rooms, gardens, and those with historic interest in East Anglia”. Producing literature to promote the pubs will be part of the campaign. Mr Allen says that day trips are currently the biggest growing area of tourism so pubs should be getting a share of that trade. The reporter says the days of the spit and sawdust pub are long gone and today’s customers are discerning and critical, some wanting to take the family along, and some not even wanting to drink. East Anglian landlords will be among the first to offer this special promotion. This short video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
