Scenes of the Bedfordshire Against Nuclear Dumping blockade as Nirex attempt to enter the site.

A sign for the ‘C.E.G.B. private site’ is obscured by the colourful banner of Bedfordshire Against Nuclear Dumping. Anglia TV reporter Peter Lugg says the Nirex contractors have tried to access the site every day over the past two weeks and met with local resistance. A large crowd including children is awaiting the contractors’ convoy. The managing director of Nirex, Tom McInerney, has come to talk with the protest leaders and finds himself amongst the crowd and debating with the protesters. Press and media reporters capture the exchanges with their microphones. Mr McInerney says Nirex intend to access the site peacefully to carry out the investigation of the site as one the potential locations for nuclear waste. A boy challenges Mr McInerney asking if he thinks the waste is so safe, why doesn’t he put it in his own back yard. Dr Jerry Fitch, Chair of BAND is interviewed and says they intend to protest without violence, but they will continue to harass the Nirex workers and if there are arrests this will be to protect the best interests of the protesters’ children and grandchildren. The reporter says there is likely to be a court injunction applied in the next week or so. This short video made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
