Health Minister interviewed about government publicity campaign and research spending on AIDS.

At Braintree, Essex, Anglia TV reporter Alastair Yates interviews Health Minister Tony Newton about government spending on AIDS. The minister says the Medical Research Council is looking for worthwhile projects which demonstrate an advance. He says the current situation with AIDS is that we are a long way from a cure or vaccine – 5 – 10 years, not 5 – 10 weeks. Asked about the government’s publicity campaign and warnings, Tony Newton says that is the only effective weapon at the moment to make people aware so they can reduce risk. The government spend has been around £10 million already, plus spending by local health authorities. The aim is to build the public education campaign, look at resources for treatment and continue research. This video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
