The Prime Minister sees an exhibition on alternative energy and visits the Open University.
At Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, anti-nuclear protesters stand with placards as a motorcade drives past carrying the Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. Since leaving Bedfordshire her car has been the target of protesters campaigning against the testing of a site at Elstow in Bedfordshire as a potential nuclear waste dump. Inside the Energy World Exhibition which is focused on alternative energy, Margaret Thatcher sees Britain’s largest sundial which is apparently running 10 minutes slow. The exhibition is run on wind and solar power with wind turbines and solar panels on prominent display. The Prime Minister sets running a turbine which can power an entire housing estate and addresses the small gathering from a podium. The filmed part of her speech is about modern house-building standards and the return of the conservatory, or sun room (which she says is lacking from 10 Downing Street). Next Mrs Thatcher is shown the winter gardens at Milton Keynes Central Business Exchange, the flagship of the Corporation’s commercial building programme combining office blocks, shopping, and recreational facilities. The motorcade moves on to the Open University where the Prime Minister is greeted by the Vice Chancellor and shown a display of the scientific and technological training facilities. Press and media are in attendance throughout the visits. The reporter was Peter Lugg for this video made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
