Industrial action in response to proposed privatisation of hospital cleaning services.

They are reacting to a statement from the Chairman of the Kettering Health Authority concerning possible privatisation of domestic and cleaning contracts. Tomorrow there will be another occupation and a mass meeting. Union regional officer Kumar Sandy says that health authority staff are angry, bitter and disappointed and the latest decision comes as a shock. With feelings running so high, industrial action is inevitable. Anglia Television reporter John Kiddey holds a copy of a document he has obtained marked ‘Strictly Confidential’ which was discussed at the last health authority meeting. It reveals that private domestic and cleaning services at other hospitals have failed to meet required standards and the cost saving is likely to be far smaller than estimated given the cost of redundancies. The government favours one particular contractor. Kettering Health Authority is under pressure from the regional health authority and the government to review privatisation options, which the unions see as political interference.
