Union representative reacts to the call for a secret ballot of Vauxhall Bedford Truck workers.

Standing outside Vauxhall’s Bedford Truck factory at Dunstable, Bedfordshire, union convenor George Slessor gives his views on the call for a secret ballot on the company’s latest pay offer. Due to the complexity of the offer, the union will be advising members to reject it. Mr Slessor explains why this is a critical time for the factory, the union and the workforce. The reporter was Owen Spencer-Thomas for this video made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.

The Vauxhall plant on Boscombe Road, Dunstable made Bedford Trucks. It opened in 1942 as an addition to the Vauxhall works at Luton. The plant once employed nearly 6,000 people. General Motors closed the plant in 1987. George Slessor was factory representative for the Amalgamated Engineering Union.
