Concern about racial discrimination in treatment of applicants at Peterborough Passport Office.

Exterior views of the Passport Office in Peterborough. Reporter John Kiddey says that the office was found guilty of racial discrimination in a case brought the previous year, and compensation was paid. A new incident concerns the response to a man who is a British citizen and whose family came originally from Kenya. When applying for his passport he asked the Community Relations Officer Mahebub Ladha to check his documentation and accompany him to the Passport Office. They were asked to wait at the back of the room while others were served, until the application was accepted following a further check. Mahebub Ladha describes what happened and questions why the documentation required additional checking. He feels that the response to the applicant was discriminatory and that the family’s Kenyan origin was not relevant as the British citizen is entitled to a British passport. The reporter says the Home Office deny discrimination and that the application had to be given closer scrutiny because of the Kenyan connection. This short video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
