Scenes of families in substandard accommodation and interviews with MP and housing agency.

Exterior and interior views of a house in York Road, Southend-on-Sea where three families, fifteen people in total, share cramped accommodation. Room space is filled with beds, and five people share one bedroom costing £99 a week. Fifteen Asian families have been moved from the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to Southend. Abdul Hakim says they are unhappy and cramped and want to return to London. Teddy Taylor, MP for Southend, has written to Ian Gow, Housing Minister. He says the move by Tower Hamlets to relocate the families to bed and breakfast accommodation in Southend is wrong, indefensible and illegal. He says, on a humanitarian level, these families want to be in London amongst people who speak their language. Anglia Television reporter Rebecca Atherstone interviews David Poulten, co-director of Merendase Property Services Ltd, the agency which supplied the housing. Scenes show another house in better condition than that occupied by the families. Mr Poulten denies that the houses are overcrowded. He says they are inspected by Tower Hamlets and that Merendase are also working with the Bangladeshi Youth League and carrying out their recommendations. This video was made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
